NSW is facing extreme fire danger conditions with a warning worsening weather could raise the level to catastrophic.
Total fire bans are in place for most parts of NSW except for the far north west and the far south west.
The Greater Sydney, Illawarra/Shoalhaven and Great Hunter areas are also facing extreme fire danger on Thursday.
NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons says there is potential for some locations to reach catastrophic if the weather deteriorates beyond the forecast.
"These are dangerous conditions, and it's critical that you understand the risk and make your final preparations now do not leave it until the last minute," he said.
Hot temperatures and strong winds are driving the fire danger with winds of up to 60-70 km/h forecasted for southern parts of NSW.
The Bureau of Meteorology also forecasts gusts of up to 100 km/h.
The southern ranges could see winds up to 120km/h.
Sydney is tipped to reach 37-39 degrees while the far west could reach 42 degrees.
RFS Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers said an army of firefighters was ready.
"We've got literally thousands of firefighters ready to jump on fires as soon as they start tomorrow," he told ABC Radio.
Two air cranes will arrive in Sydney on Thursday from Greece, but they will require checks and won't be operational until next week. The National Parks and Wildlife Service is also preparing for the heightened risk and will close a number of areas in the Blue Mountains and Wollemi national parks.
NPWS will also have an aerial response team ready to respond.
